I had Ron Burgundy hair, but I took the job very seriously as did 99% of those in our newsroom. We were in too small of a market (in the early 1980s, we were in the mid-70s … out of about 210 markets) to have or deserve massive egos.

I started on weekends but moved to weekdays a month later. I covered Davenport and Bettendorf cops and city government and whatever was going on in Scott County. About a year into that, it was obvious I was better suited to feature stories and the end-of-the-news stories became my beat.
Just about that time, the end-of-the-news stories were going out of fashion. Because we needed to have the weather on three times a show (eating up 5-6 minutes) and we had to have a two-minute health segment on every night. But I’m not bitter. ;(
